For all the mothers, those aspiring to be, and those who choose the path of motherhood, Mujigae 무지개 (Korean for “rainbow”) is a family drama that beautifully blends Filipino and Korean cultures. This touching film, which debuts in SM Cinemas on October 9, tells the emotional journey of a young orphan and her unexpected mother figure.
At the heart of the story is five-year-old Mujigae, portrayed by emerging child actress Ryrie Sophia. Mujigae, who is half-Korean and half-Filipino, faces an uncertain future following the death of her mother in South Korea. She is left in the care of her estranged Aunt Sunny, played by Kapamilya star Alexa Ilacad. Their complex relationship is the core of this drama, directed by Randolph Longjas and produced by UxS (Unitel x Straightshooters).
The cast also features renowned Korean actor Kim Ji-soo, now part of GMA’s Sparkle roster, and comedienne Rufa Mae Quinto, who makes a special appearance. Supporting roles are filled by talented actors including Richard Quan, Kate Alejandrino, Donna Cariage, Cai Cortez, and many more.
Mujigae tells the story of a five-year-old orphan who, after the loss of her mother, must leave South Korea and move to the Philippines with her aunt Sunny. Together, they embark on an emotional journey as they confront their grief, cultural differences, and the meaning of family. Throughout the film, Mujigae learns to find her place in the world, discovering strength in love, courage, and resilience.

The trailer for Mujigae 무지개 has already captivated audiences, amassing millions of views and sparking emotional responses from viewers. One particularly touching moment shows Sunny struggling with the unexpected responsibility of raising her niece, shouting, “It’s my choice: I don’t want kids! I don’t want the responsibility!” Despite her initial reluctance, Sunny finds herself bonding with Mujigae, who gradually transforms her life.

The appearance of Mujigae’s biological father, played by Kim Ji-soo, adds tension to the story, forcing the young girl to choose between two homes and redefining the idea of family.

The film has been lauded for its emotional depth, with many viewers anticipating an award-worthy performance from Alexa Ilacad as she portrays Sunny’s complex emotions. As one commenter noted, “The trailer alone made me tear up! I can’t imagine how much more emotional the full movie will be.”

With its themes of love, loss, and the unexpected connections that define family, Mujigae is expected to resonate deeply with viewers.
Behind the Camera: Director’s Vision and Producer’s Reflection

Director Randolph Longjas, known for his previous work Star na si Van Damme Stallone (2016), returns to the big screen with Mujigae. For Longjas, the project holds special meaning, marking his return to full-length filmmaking. Reflecting on the journey, he shared, “It feels like making my first film all over again. This project means the world to me.”

He expressed gratitude for the cast and crew, especially the child actors, adding, “I wanted them to own their characters, and they truly amazed me with their dedication and ability to stay in character, even after the cameras stopped rolling.”

Producer Madonna Tarrayo also shared her personal connection to the film’s message, explaining how Mujigae explores the idea that family isn’t solely defined by blood. “Family can come from anywhere—friends, co-workers, even pets. That’s what Mujigae means to me,” she said.

Tarrayo emphasized the importance of watching this film in cinemas, noting, “We wanted to create a movie that feels expansive yet intimate, a truly cinematic experience that deserves to be seen on the big screen.”
As the film’s trailer ends, Ryrie Sophia as Mujigae delivers a charming invitation to the audience: “My name is Mujigae! I’m excited to be friends with all of you.”

With its blend of heartwarming moments and tear-jerking scenes, Mujigae 무지개 promises to be a memorable family film that will leave a lasting impression on audiences. Don’t miss it on October 9, exclusively at SM Cinemas.
