“Babae at Baril” took home top honors on this year’s QCinema International Film Festival including Best Director for Rae Red, Gender Sensitivity Award, and Best Actress for Janine Gutierrez.
In "Babae at Baril," Janine plays a saleslady in a local department store living her every day normal life until she finds a "peculiar looking gun right on her doorstep. Suddenly, she can do anything she wants, talk back to whoever she wants, and even hurt anyone she wants. It tackles norms and reflection of society. Battered woman, street crimes, police brutality and corruption with Metro Manila as background cohesively weaves in this film.
Janine Gutierrez deserves the acting award. She is a reliable actress that delivers, and she benefits from the characters that was complexly written, and she pays that off by giving it justice. Her moment during the transition of her character is really effective and one of the film's highlights. Very intense ang acting ni Janine specially the rape scene na mata lang ang umaarte. The movie is well done because it established its story creatively with effective ensemble performance of its cast which also stars Felix Roco, Elijah Canlas, JC Santos, and Sky Teotico with special participation of Ruby Ruiz, Allan Paule, and Archie Adamos. The film is Rae Red’s 2nd feature film and her first solo directorial effort but definitely, this will opens more opportunities for her to create more award winning film
Babae at Baril is still showing in selected cinemas until October 22, 2019.
QCinema 2019 runs from October 13 to 22 and screening films at Gateway Mall, Ayala Trinoma, Robinsons Galleria, UPFI Cine Adarna, Cinema ’76 Anonas, and Cinema Centenario in Quezon City.
