After two decades, the legendary action director
John Woo is coming back to theaters this year with his much awaited action movie
Silent Night. He is one of the best action directors of all time. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s with his Hong Kong-based productions Bullet in the Head and Hard-Boiled (both of which have the most jaw-dropping body counts in action cinema). His American debut was with 1993's Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle Hard Target, which was critically and financially successful enough to earn him the directing job on the 1996 blockbuster Broken Arrow.
“Silent Night” is a dialogue-free thriller starring The Suicide Squad’s
Joel Kinnaman as a grieving father whose son is killed in the crossfire of a gang war that happens outside his family's home on Christmas Eve. Unable to speak due to his wounds, Kinnaman plots a vengeful massacre against those who took everything from him and will enact his plan on the anniversary of the tragedy. He will be taking the path of a vigilante who obsessively trains himself to complete the singular goal on his mind.
The movie is a testament on how good of an actor Joel Kinnaman is. Versatile, great character play, and just ultimately believable in most any role that he plays. Even though I know that this is a movie that is meant to be fast paced, action-packed, and one heck of a thrilling ride, I also see the great underlying theme and motivation of the movie. In this case, it really is about a father’s love for his child. A story about how great that love can be, that bond between father and son, that it can border on simple focus and anger towards anyone who dares to hurt his child. I just have a soft spot for it.
The movie is very well-made. Joel Kinnaman brings the character a hard-edged, mercilessly focused anger, and director John Woo hurtles through action sequences at a breathless velocity. Moviegoers will surely enjoy the whole storyline, the progression of the movie, and the complex bits and pieces that keep coming at you and will really keep you in suspense. Honestly, you have got to see this!
The film also stars Scott Mescudi(also known as Kid Cudi) and Catalina Scandino Moreno (TV's From).
The movie is set to be released in theaters November 29. Distributed by Nathan Studios Inc
