Manila, Philippines - The internationally acclaimed award winning film “Saving Flora” is finally here in the Philippines. This will surely be the next big hit for viewers who loves elephants. It’s been years already since moviegoers fell in love with “Free Willy”, this year another unique story of love, friendship, and survival is about to unfold in Philippine cinemas as Womy Film Productions brought to us “Saving Flora”.

The film tells the story of a teenage girl and her elephant, and if that sounds like an unwieldy adaptation of the sturdy old formula about a boy and his dog, it is. Elephants are not as charismatic as dogs, not as easily trained, and cannot be hugged. Yet "Saving Flora" works its way around the physical reality of its animal lead, and somehow becomes one of this year's best family pictures.

The movie is a drama about a circus elephant named Flora. She is no longer able to perform the tricks that made her an asset to the circus. The owner has decided to have her euthanized because she is more of a liability and expense now that she can’t pull her weight in the circus. Her fate is not a desirable one, so 14 year old Dawn, the daughter of the circus owner releases Flora and takes her away from the danger. They are bound for the elephant preserve where Flora will be safe from harm, but they have to make it through the woods and the distance of 200 kilometers. There are dangers on all sides, including two elephant hunters and a fast moving river. That sets into motion the predictable, but no less effective, conclusion, in which the threads of teenage girl, elephant and family are all woven together nicely.

The scenes with the elephant are very convincing. The film also does what it can to give Flora a personality. In fact, it goes a little too far; by the end of the movie, Flora spontaneously understands what the lead characters are communicating. Beautiful cinematography, I love the shot where they crossed the mountain under the moon!

Another asset are the actors. Jenna Ortega does a credible job as Dawn. She give a polished performance. Her breakdown scene in the rain, her scene when she found out that Flora will be killed, all these scenes will bring you into tears so don’t forget to bring lots of tissues. Truly a tear-jerking movie. The film also has some great supporting performances from the rest of the cast including David Arquette, who is actually very good here. David gives areal and believable performance. Martin Martinez (one of the standouts from the supporting cast), and Tom Arnold.

"Saving Flora" has a kind of gentle sweetness that I found very appealing. It is about love and friendship - about a young girl discovering herself - and about adventure. And the "save the elephants" subplot makes it more than just an adventure. The screenplay is written with a certain intelligence. The film addresses the inhumane treatment of animals. It shows the dangers innocent animals are facing when they can no longer help there masters. Through this film, it will spread awareness on the conservation of elephants. The movie is sure to be appealing to younger viewers, and it's smart enough to keep older viewers involved, too.
