Jose Javier Reyes’WALWAL is a warm and
insightful look into the inner lives of teenagers. The movie stars today’s
hottest young heartthrobs Donny Pangilinan, Kiko Estrada, Jerome Ponce, and
Elmo Magalona, in their most pristine and memorable roles.
WALWAL is witty, and impacting with its
in-depth portrayal of teenagers nowadays. It feels fresh, showing teenage
friends opening up about their personal problems with a great dialogue and
inspired actions. It is centered on a group of four friends – Dondi (Elmo),
Intoy (Jerome), Marco (Kiko), and Bobby (Donny), who share a bond that they
will do anything to protect each other as they traverse the most critical
period of their adulthood. On their sophomore year in college, each of them
confronted with a major dilemma that would determine their sense of direction. How will they survive on this teen years?
There appears to be quite a few sidebar
stories within the plot, but it’s fascinating how they all get together without
leaving anyone out. Each character gets a chance to have their own spotlight.
Jerome and Kiko’s characters tackles sensitive topic on premarital sex, early
fatherhood, school problem, and family issues which is the heart of the movie. Both
actors perfectly fits the role and give justice to their characters. Next is
Elmo, he might not have the most moments, but he certainly makes the best of
what he has to do. The way he switch emotions in seconds is a testament of how
much growth he has achieved already as an actor. Donny is a revelation on this
movie. Hindi siya mukhang newbie. Camera loves him so much,
marami siyang anggulong gwapo and he acts naturally. Talagang nanalaytay ang
showbiz blood sa kanya. He is really one of showbiz next big thing to watch out this
year!
The movie launches also the team up of Donny
and Kisses, who charismatically portray their characters and adds charm to the
film. Considering it’s just their first movie, Walwal is no doubt a good start.
Not to mention the romance was so sweet. DonKiss never fails na pakiligin ang
audience. Favorite ko yun nasa video shop sila and tinanong ni Kisses si Donny
“Type mo 'ko noh?!”. I want to see them in
more projects together. Marami pa silang mapapakita as actors. This is a good
start for them.
Another audience favorite ay ang DevKi. They
act naturally that would make you believe that they are not acting. They can do
an Angelica-JM indie type of film. Gusto ko yun mga lines nila, very natural at
totoo- eto yun mga ginagamit talaga ng mga kabataan nowadays. Favorite scene ko yun
nag-uusap sila sa bakod. Natural na natural ang batuhan nila ng lines. I would like
to commend also Angeli Bayani, gumanap na mother ni Jerome, for portraying the role really
well.
Overall, Walwal does not only entertains
its audience, it mirrors out the challenges millennial are facing nowadays. It
is an eye-opener to everyone especially to the youth - think before we act
and taking responsibilities in our actions. Just because Walwal is a teen movie
doesn’t mean it flinches against its surprisingly heavy topics. It had
something to say about being an adult and how the lessons we learned as a
teenager would carry us in to adulthood, for better and for worse.
