Charming, funny, and
very entertaining!
I got a chance to
watch “The Book Club” last night at SM
Megamall. This hilarious movie stars four of Hollywood’s legendary Actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen,
and Mary Steenburgen.
On this film, Diane (Diane Keaton) is recently widowed
after 40 years of marriage and facing down a pair of domineering daughters
(Alicia Silverstone and Katie Aselton). Vivian (Jane Fonda) is the successful,
slutty, proudly unattached friend. Sharon
(Candice Bergen) is still working through a decades-old divorce. She is the high-powered legal professional with a cat named Ginsburg. Bergen's
played for laughs (she finds her suitors through online dating Bumble). Carol's (Mary Steenburgen) marriage is in a slump after
35 years. Steenburgen's somewhat bittersweet
except for a predictable sequence involving Viagra and its long-lasting
effects. Four lifelong
friends' lives are turned upside down to hilarious ends when their book club
tackles the infamous Fifty Shades of Grey. Before long, the women have torn through the first book and
graduated to the full trilogy, and its lessons have inspired countless
innuendos. From discovering new
romance to rekindling old flames, they inspire each other to make their next
chapter the best chapter.
No matter how you feel about
the Fifty Shades of Grey books, it's a treat to watch this quartet of
excellent actresses on screen together. The characters' various love stories
are unevenly played out. But it's not the romances that make this film watchable;
it's the supportive relationships between the women. The dialogue is authentic.
It's also refreshing for a movie cast acclaimed actors like Wallace Shawn, Ed Begley Jr., and Richard Dreyfuss in supporting roles.
Audience will also enjoy on this movie the breathtaking California and Arizona
locations and the nostalgic soundtrack, which ranges from Paul Simon and Meat
Loaf to Tom Petty and Roxy Music.
Overall, I enjoyed
watching this film. I just keep on laughing the whole time. I think I should
bring my Mom next time I watch it, surely she will love it. But this movie is
not only intended for senior audiences. I think anybody will enjoy watching the
film and can relate with each character. It is a movie with a message that
mattered less than the fun it was having while telling its story. That
self-awareness is commendable. It’s all about love, friendship, and
finding true happiness in life. Just like the movie says, Love is just a word
until someone puts a meaning into it.
“The
Book Club” showing on May 30 in Cinemas Nationwide. Release by Reality Entertainment
