Manila, Philippines - Regal Films, the studio behind the successful "Shake,Rattle, and Roll" horror movies, released a horror film entitled "The Debutantes" that has a built-in young audience waiting. Director Prime Cruz's horror movie is good-with-an-asterisk, as are "Sleepless", and his recent feature,"Ang Manananggal Sa Unit 23B". He creates a closed-in world of characters whose tendrils intertwine in emotionally complex ways. He is a filmmaker of community and family - of bonds, and their violent breaking.
The movie's tale of alienation and angst is just as poignant as ever. It leaves me scratching my head a little bit but this movie is really supposed to do that. "Mapapaisip ka why these creepy things are happening to all the characters." The movie really isn't scary but it's interesting and has a good story. Sue Ramirez is as always a joy to watch. Sue just looks so innocent but then pulls off something that is pretty disturbing. It's a good revamp for modern audiences and is worth checking out.
