Cancer continues to be a silent epidemic in the Philippines—affecting thousands of families every year. In fact, it stands as the second leading cause of death in the country, with lung, breast, and liver cancers being the most common. But there is hope. And that hope begins with awareness, prevention, and accessible information.

In a timely and impactful event, the Pandesal Forum—a non-partisan civic initiative by Kamuning Bakery Café owned by Wilson Lee Flores—hosted a special discussion on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, and Modern Treatments. The highlight of the forum was a rare and insightful conversation with world-renowned cancer specialist, Professor Dr. Mu Feng.

Dr. Mu Feng, known internationally for his integrative approach to cancer care, emphasized the importance of combining modern technologies with the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

According to Dr. Mu, while breakthroughs like targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and personalized treatments are revolutionizing cancer care, the holistic support provided by TCM plays a vital role in enhancing outcomes. “We can reduce treatment side effects, boost the immune system, and support emotional well-being—all of which are essential for long-term recovery,” he shared.

The discussion didn’t shy away from hard truths.
• Lung cancer remains the deadliest, often diagnosed at late stages due to limited screening and low awareness.
• Preventive habits—like avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress—are still not widely adopted.
• A lack of public knowledge on early detection and alternative treatment options continues to put lives at risk.

Dr. Mu emphasized the need for community-level education, accessible screening, and a more integrative approach to cancer treatment in the country.

“Early detection is the strongest weapon we have,” Dr. Mu stated. Routine checkups, self-examinations, and cancer screening tests (such as mammograms, pap smears, and low-dose CT scans for smokers) can dramatically increase the chances of successful treatment.

The forum served as a powerful reminder that many cancers are treatable—even curable—when caught early.

Let this event be your reminder: health is wealth, and awareness is power.
